As an axiom, Americans accept diversity as a hallmark of tolerance. Not just as means to an end, but as an unquestionable, implicitly stated goal itself in its own right. We strive to have diverse schools, and a diverse workforce, claiming that diversity is creative: a diverse group can approach problems from different angles and can come up with the more varying solutions as opposed to a group of contributors with uniform upbringing. There are several assumptions inferred in the scenario projected onto the screen of our collective minds. It is similar to a school project - multiple students working together as a group, competing against other groups to solve a challenging moonshot problem, and gets first place for submitting a strikingly creative solution first. How similar is this abundance of available contributors to real-life projects? As managers, we often need to compare the performance of our direct reports and rank people, working on different projects, with different levels of experience, project scopes, and responsibilities. Who didn't secretly wish for having another Chris instead of Sam to get the project done on time?
